Working Principle of High Temperature Lithium Thionyl Chloride Battery
During discharge, a lithium thionyl chloride battery releases electrons from the lithium anode. These electrons flow to the cathode and react with the thionyl chloride on the cathode, producing lithium ions, lithium chloride, sulfur, and sulfur dioxide. The overall reaction equation is: 4Li + 2SOCl → 4LiCl + S + SO₂. Sulfur and sulfur dioxide dissolve in the excess thionyl chloride electrolyte, while lithium chloride is insoluble and deposits on the cathode.
Safety Precautions
Do Not Charge: Lithium thionyl chloride batteries are disposable and must not be charged. Charging will cause uncontrollable chemical reactions inside the battery, potentially leading to explosion or fire.
Prevent Short Circuit:Never short circuit the battery. Avoid direct contact between the positive and negative terminals and a metal conductor to prevent the generation of a large current inside the battery, which could cause a safety accident.
Prevent Over-Discharge:Never over-discharge the battery. Once the battery has discharged to its termination voltage (e.g., 2.0V), stop using it immediately to prevent damage to the internal structure.
Avoid High Temperatures: Batteries may explode in high-temperature environments. Therefore, avoid using or storing the battery in high-temperature environments.
Correct Installation and Use: The battery should be installed with the positive terminal horizontal and facing upwards. If the positive terminal is downwards, some of the capacity will be unusable.
